" Winner of the International Photography Awards with the Linhof Master Technika Prize has been announced "

Portraits of gun-wielding Guatemalan bodyguards have unanimously won the vote of the judges of this year's BJP International Photography Prize.

The images by Mexican photographer Carla Verea were amongst hundreds of entries to the 2007 competition but won over judges, including Nick Galvin from Magnum Photos, publisher Chris Boot and Charlie Crane, who was last year's winner.

Verea, who has been a photographer for nearly 10 years, wins a prize package worth around £12,000. This includes a Master Technika Classic 4x5 camera from Linhof and an exhibition at the AOP Gallery in London, with her images printed by one of Europe's leading fine art labs, Spectrum Photographic. The project will also be featured in BJP, around the time of the exhibition in mid November.

Verea told BJP: 'I am thrilled to have the opportunity to show my work in London and to create some amazing new photographs with the new camera. I can't wait ...'

She found the competition by chance when trawling on the Internet. She relates: 'I was looking on the web for interesting competitions and I found BJP's. It was exactly what I was looking for. I love large format and I have always wanted such a sharp camera. Then, I started to fantasise about having an exhibition in London. I thought the prize was exactly what I wanted for Christmas!'

This is the fourth year that the competition has run. Our first winner was Dominic Harris, who showed his work at the On the Wall art fair, where he sold all of his prints twice over and won the best stand award. The 2005 winner was Frank Herfort, who is now shooting for clients such as Stern and Forbes from his new base in Moscow. Last year's winner, Charlie Crane has won much acclaim after publishing his prize-winning project Welcome to Pyongyang with Chris Boot.

The exhibition will open on 20 November with more details about the show, including how to get tickets for the private view, to be published in BJP in the coming weeks.
